Our Clergy

Archpriest John Klingel, Rector

Fr. John became interested in Orthodox Christianity while studying towards a Masters Degree in Theology at Fordham University, under prominent Jesuit theologians, such as the Rev. Gerald McCool, S.J., and beloved Orthodox theologian Fr. John Meyendorff. Fr. John, with his wife, Margaret (Peggy) later converted to Orthodoxy, and were Chrismated into the faith by Fr. Michael Mihalick, here at St. Andrew’s. Fr. John was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1987 by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Theodosius, at Saint Vladimir’s Seminary, where he was studying towards a Masters of Divinity.

Upon his ordination, Fr. John & Peggy, served the chapel at West Point Military Academy, before moving to Massachusetts and serving at St. Mark of Ephesus Mission in Kingston. For a short time, Fr. John was attached to Holy Trinity Cathedral in Boston. In 1994, Fr. John and family moved back to the New York area, where he was attached to St. Andrew’s as an assistant to Fr. Michael, and benefitted from his mentorship. On September 6, 2001, Fr. Michael, who had become ill, retired, and Fr. John was appointed acting rector by His Eminence Peter, Archbishop of New York & New Jersey.

Since becoming rector, Fr. John has overseen the reestablishment of the parish’s Sisterhood, the creation of a Parish Council elected by the Parish, a stabilization of the parish’s finances, and the completion of several projects such as the Golgotha icon memorial; the installation of a modern parking lot; the design, construction, and consecration of a new bell tower; the institution of an annual parish charity program; the completion of the parish’s iconographic scheme; the renovation of the parish rectory and community hall; and the creation of “The Cupola” a journal of parish news and theological reflections published throughout the year. Through his sermons, adult education classes, and hopefully through this website, Fr. John seeks to focus the parish on its spiritual growth, so that we, as a community, might draw nearer to God.

Hello Father Klingel,
Hope you are well! I am working on putting together some pictures from the past for St.Mark’s website (for our 30th Anniversary in 2013). Do you have a few pictures from you time at St.Mark’s that you could scan to me or mail to me (I would return them to you of course!).
Thanks so much
Laura (McGillicuddy) Geigle
